Task and objective

The Marienburg Castle Foundation is the core of the overall solution for the future of this outstanding cultural monument. It was established by Ernst August, Hereditary Prince of Hanover, at the end of 2019 and is the result of intensive discussions between the State of Lower Saxony and the founder.

After the financing of the urgently needed renovation measures was secured through a joint effort by the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony, the Hereditary Prince transferred the castle and many thousands of culturally and historically significant inventory items into the ownership of the foundation.

The painting collection was acquired by the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover in order to present it permanently as a museum exhibit at Marienburg Castle.

The goal of all involved is to structurally restore Marienburg Castle by 2030 and, at the same time, to comprehensively develop the unique collection in terms of conservation, science and curatorial methods.

At the end of this process, the foundation should be able to present the rich cultural heritage of the Welfs at Marienburg to the general public at a high museum level in a permanent exhibition that appeals to as many people as possible and is educational, as well as in sophisticated special exhibitions and other formats.
